In the Real World: Jeremie does not go to Lyoko, so of course this write-up will focus on his daily life in the real world. Jeremie is pretty much a genius. He’s great in all his subjects (with the exception of P.E. perhaps? It never actually says so though...), makes excellent grades, and is an expert with computers and technology. He almost seems like the typical “science geek”, even down to his glasses and somewhat nerdy clothing. But unlike most geeky geniuses in fiction, Jeremie isn’t socially inept and lacking in common sense. He has friends and I think it’s safe to say that he has a girlfriend (Aelita). At times he is truly brilliant with his inventions and strategies. And sometimes he makes mistakes. But what’s surprising is the fact that he can be just as witty and sarcastic as the others in some cases.
Although he seems like an unlikely character to do so, Jeremie has practically assumed the role of leader in this group. He comes up with most of the plans and issues orders. He’s the one who calls everyone to come to the factory and go to Lyoko. And being in this position gives him a lot of responsibility. It is his job to monitor the “super scanner” and remain ever vigil in case Xana attacks. He must always be ready. But there is a downside to this.
In one of the more recent episodes, we get a few hints about how they may have discovered Lyoko, mostly pertaining to Jeremie. In the episode, Xana disguises himself as Franz Hopper and convinces Odd, Ulrich, and Yumi that being scanned into Lyoko is causing real life health problems in their physical bodies, and that so far only Yumi has been affected. The others (except for Aelita) become angry with Jeremie, pretty much blaming him for Yumi’s new-found illness. At first, I was appalled with how they reacted. I thought it was highly unfair to blame Jeremie for something he didn’t know about. But then I thought more about it, and realized that Jeremie was probably the one who discovered Lyoko to begin with, and convinced the others to go in and see what was there. If he really did drag his friends into all of this, and it was making them literally ill, I could see their point a little easier. Still yet, Jeremie simply wanted to help Aelita, even from the beginning, so I see his point too. In the end, no one was really getting sick and they all made up, but I think the episode presented a clear example of how Jeremie’s responsibility can make it hard on him.
Also plaguing Jeremie is the insecurity he feels. In season one, he was trying to find a way to materialize Aelita. It was a constant struggle for him, and in the end, he was successful. But in season two, we discover that Aelita has a virus that will cause her to be destroyed if they try to destroy Xana. So, Jeremie’s new mission is to find the anti-virus. Like with the materialization process of season one, the anti-virus is ever-elusive for poor Jeremie, and his frustration at not being able to find it is evident. To counter this, Jeremie is often coming up with new inventions. Sometimes his inventions work wonderfully, but sometimes they go horribly wrong. And when one goes wrong, it seems as if his confidence is shattered. Luckily, he has his friends there to help him pick back up the pieces.
To his credit, Jeremie is a very devoted friend. Although he doesn’t fight (even in the real world), he never shies away from danger. He has suffered plenty of physical attacks from Xana or Xana-possessed people. How many times has he sat at the computer while the others are in Lyoko, fully aware that some horrible creature is on making its way there to hurt him? The fact is, he believes in his friends and trusts that they will get Aelita to the tower so that she can deactivate it. Helping him with this is his strong will. A good example is when he was turned into a zombie, and still yet held onto his humanity long enough to launch the return to the past and undo the damage.
Something else interesting to note is the fact that Jeremie’s battle with Xana seems to be on a more personal level than it is for the others. It almost seems as if Xana is Jeremie’s ultimate rival. This could be because Xana is a very intellectual creature, and Jeremie is as well. Or maybe it’s because Xana has done so much to hurt Aelita, whom Jeremie cares for so deeply. But the truly interesting part is that Xana seems to consider Jeremie his worst enemy as well. A lot of the time, Jeremie is Xana’s main target when attacking the group physically. Perhaps he fears Jeremie’s mental abilities, perhaps recognizes that they could rival his own someday. Whatever the case may be, Jeremie has personally faced Xana before (in season one), and is, to my knowledge, the only one to do so.
In Lyoko: Jeremie only went to Lyoko once, and we were not shown what happened while he was there. We are told by Ulrich that Jeremie looked ridiculous, and Jeremie himself says that he will never go back to Lyoko, no matter what. So, I will instead focus on his role while the others are in Lyoko.
Jeremie monitors everything that happens on Lyoko from his computer. In fact, he is the one who transports the others into Lyoko to begin with. I assume that he created their weapons, and he also created their vehicles. He helps them keep up with how many life points they have left, warns them ahead of time of approaching monsters, and verbally directs them to the towers. He often offers up strategies for them as well.
Jeremie’s help is invaluable while they are in Lyoko. This is evidenced by the fact that the others seem a bit panicky when he is removed from the computer (usually by a Xana-possessed person). Although a lot of people wanted to see him go into Lyoko and fight with the others, I don’t see how it would work since they NEED someone to monitor the computer and direct them. Aside from Jeremie, Aelita is the only other person who can work the computer very well, and she is necessary to deactivate the towers. Jeremie is perfect for his role.
