Highschool of the Dead is a relatively new manga series written by Satou Daisuke and drawn by Satou Shouji. It follows a group of highschool students who must escape from their school and learn to survive in a ravaged world following a zombie outbreak. The series features several fascinating characters and beautiful, dynamic artwork. It has intense action sequences and uses perverted comedy and a few particularly humorous characters to lighten up the otherwise grim mood.

The overall style of the series has a very strong video game feel to it, with different characters having different fighting styles and strengths (at one point main character Takashi even assigns them all roles in a typical RPG party). This is truly a series for the Resident Evil generation.

Highschool of the Dead is a fun, compelling, and beautifully drawn series full of energy and quirky nods to various other anime/manga/horror movies/video games. It's very tongue-in-cheek, but it has a tragic serious side as well. We can only pray for a speedy (and uncensored) U.S. release.
